At a reception led by IU President Michael A. McRobbie, SPICE Professor L. Jean Camp was the first of five IU professors to be recognized for being made AAAS fellows in 2017. The reception was hosted on January 25th, 2018 in IU’s elegant Frangipani room. Amongst the catered delectables, friends and colleages assembled to show their respect and admiration of L. Jean Camp, Matthew Hahn, Andrew Wiley, Chen Zhu, and Adam Zlotnick who were all newly awarded AAAS fellows.
Professor Camp’s AAAS Fellowship, bestowed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, has been made in recognition of a lifetime of achievement in the advancement of science and research as the AAAS citation reads:
For substantial contributions to the economics of information security, online risk communication, and human-centered computer security and privacy, including for populations often excluded in system design.
Professor Camp is the Director of Center for Security and Privacy in Informatics, Computing, and Engineering and has a career in security and privacy which Indiana University outlined in their announcement on her award:
A leading authority on information security, Camp researches the intersection of security and society, with a particular interest in security and economics. Her work toward improving information security in consumer-level, internet-connected devices has been supported by major grants from the National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Camp joined IU from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where she was affiliated with the National Center for Digital Government, and served two terms as both the director of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility and president of the International Financial Cryptography Association. She is author of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, 16 book chapters and two books on subjects such as cybersecurity, privacy and trust.
She is also a leader on many of IU’s graduate, Ph.D. and undergraduate courses on information security and serves as the director of Center for Security and Privacy in the School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering.
Professor Camp currently leads a large body of research students working in the areas of IoT, HCI and Usability as well as founding a variety of research centers such as IU’s IoT & ETHOS houses where practical solutions to research concerns can be tested and solved.
Driven by a lifetime desire to improve the world we live in, Professor Camp’s driven focus on practical computer security for non-technical people is summed up in her maxim,
